...full story Japan Airlines has reopened its lounge at Osaka for First and Business Class passengers on international flights. One of the least inspired lounge interiors of recent years has opened at Osaka airport. Japan Airlines describes it as being in Modern Japanese Style.

Osaka JAL Sakura Lounge

Called the Sakura lounge, the new JAL Osaka lounge has been redesigned with the concept of Modern Japanese Style according to JAL, and the airline says it wants to create a comfortable environment in its lounges to deliver a message of the "Heart of Japan" and "Japanese Hospitality". There is seating for 177 passengers, with the rarity now of a smoking room with seats. There are two massage chairs, and improved amenities such as a baggage store with electric locks. The Sakura Lounge at Osaka Kansai Airport is used by many carriers without a dedicated lounge at the airport. It is airside: turn right after security, and it is at the far end of the mile-long terminal, near gate 38, past the Ciao shop. As JAL's main lounge at the airport, it is a full oneworld lounge, with oneworld access: despite this it is used by a number of definitely non-oneworld airlines, such as Singapore Airlines, Continental, and Air New Zealand. The lounge can be a bit gloomy, despite large windows, which oddly, have huge curtains hanging down over them. What is really freaky is the way there are all three rows of a dozen chairs all lined up to look out of the window: it is like a lecture hall. The lounge is also stuffed full of furniture: large brown leather armchairs and small coffee tables: all in all, this means that the lounge just seems crammed.

Food

Osaka JAL Sakura Lounge

The revamp adds a large, if dull, dining area with an enhanced buffet counter, including what is called a domestic beef curry developed by the chef of Hotel Nikko. The food and drink area is in a refectory area, up against one of the walls, and with an island food counter. Alas, there isn't much food here: there are just a few snacks and finger food, with packets of nuts, cheese, and biscuits. In the evenings there is hot food, with special beef curry, cold udon, miso soup, and seafood gratin.

Bar

The bar area is pretty poor too. There are only a five bottles of spirits in one alcove, while in the other is a bucket with one white, and a red wine on the shelf. There are however three beer pouring machines lined up in a row.

Bathrooms

Toilets are in the lounge, as is a very impressive show suite with five showers: if none are available you can make a reservation, and take a buzzer: they will buzz you when a shower is available. In each shower room there is a fancy Japanese toilet, a bench for you to put your belongings, and of course the sink and shower. All amenities are in the shower, including a tooth brush, shower cap, hair dryer, shampoo, and soap. There is a massage facility in the lounge. There is also a new make-up corner in ladies toilets.

Business Facilities

There are three work cubicles with telephones and Ethernet ports, however there are no computers. There is free wifi: ask at reception for the password. There is a small TV high up on the wall. Osaka Airport Guide
