Gothenburg airport
Officially known as Göteborg Landvetter Airport, Gothenburg Airport is a fairly new medium sized airport serving Sweden's second largest city. With only 6 million passengers a year, it is a bit of a tiddler in global terms, but punches well above it's weight in Scandinavia Aviation, where it is one of only a few airports with Transatlantic flights.
Gothenburg Airport is quite close into the city, at just 13 miles or 20 km, south-east of Gothenburg. Easily driveable, and just a short distance by bus.
Gothenburg airport
The location of the airport isn't ideal, as it is located 150 meters above sea level and often affected by low clouds, plus it is in a fog hollow, leading to extensive delays in winter.
By far the most dominant route is the domestic hop to Stockholm, followed by Frankfurt, Amsterdam, and London.
Gothenburg Airport International Terminal
Gothenburg airport
There is just one terminal building, which also handles domestic flights, with eleven air bridges.
A novel feature is the non-Schengen part of the terminal, at Gates 22-24, after passport control. This area is just a small holding pen without any facilities, but it easily permits 'back to back' flights where you arrive and depart on the same aircraft. Even so at peak times this area can get crowded, and sometimes passengers have to walk over the tarmac to their flights.

Gothenburg Airport shuttle bus services

There are three competing bus companies, which all take you from outside the terminal to the Central train station, where the bus terminal is called the Nils Ericson Terminal.
Flygbussarna is the dominant operator, running every 20 minutes. Tickets are 119SEK (£8.50 GBP) for a single or a return for 238SEK, which doesn't offer any discounts.

However, be aware there are no busses from early evening to the airport at weekends, which is a major downside if you plan to stay at the airport hotel.
Car Hire at Gothenburg Airport
Major car hire operators are located in the Arrivals Halls. To save time and ensure you get the car you want, book your rental in advance. Rental car operators from Gothenburg Airport include: Europcar, Thrifty, Avis and Budget.
Gothenburg Airport Hotel
Gothenburg airport
There are two airport hotels at Gothenburg airport. Both are (just) within walking distance of the terminal, going through the car park.
The Landvetter airport Hotel is the traditional airport hotel, and indeed from the outside it looks very traditional. It is located on a little hillock overlooking the terminal and the carpark.
The Scandic Landvetter is a much more modern airport hotel, with 223 rooms, a pool, and a large and pleasant bar which is open late (2230).
Gothenburg Airport Left Luggage
Left luggage lockers are available at Gothenburg Airport Terminals. Maximum dimensions: 45 cm x 65 cm x 75 cm. It costs 50SEK (£4) a day.
Car parking
Gothenburg airport car parking is quite good.
There are 7,300 parking spaces at the airport.
Gothenburg Airport Bars and Restaurants
Scrimshaw Bar
Open: 0430-2000 AirsideGothenburg airport
Ask any local about where to get a pint at the Gothenburg airport and they will say Scrimshaw's bar. It is the main bar, right in the middle of the terminal.
Scrimshaw Bar serves pizzas, burgers, and sandwiches, plus some seafood from the west coast of Sweden.
Incidentally, if you wonder about the name, the bar gets its name from the handiwork that whalers produced to pass the time at sea. Using a needle or other sharp object, they carved beautiful patterns into whale teeth or horn.
O'Learys Bar
Open: 0430-2000 AirsideGothenburg airport
If you ask any tourist which bar to drink at in Gothenburg Airport, it has to be O'Learys. It's actually quite a decent pub, and 'sports' bar. However, the main reason people come here is because it is a kind of pilgrimage for those freqnet flyers who have drunk in O'Learys bars in airport terminals around the world.
O'Learys started in Gothenburg, when the Swedish founder, Jonas Reinholdsson, got the idea on a trip to Boston, where he fell in love with the city's many sports bars. The first restaurant opened in 1988 in Gothenburg. In almost three decades, more than one hundred O'Learys bars have opened around the world.
The original is still here, serving pints, burgers, and nachos and chicken wings, fajitas and ribs.
