Lufthansa Senator London Heathrow Lounge

The Lufthansa Senator Lounge at Heathrow Airport is the 'Better than Business Class' lounge, mainly for Frequent Flyers with status.

There is an enhanced range of food and drink, and the lounge is generally just that bit quieter than the main Business Class lounge next door.

It is worth flexing your Star Alliance gold card for the better menu and catering, which here is provided by Do&Co.

There is also a quiet snooze area, and pleasant comfortable seating, really designed for short hall flights: however, other lounges in Terminal 2, such as Singapore Airlines, offer vastly better pre-flight dining.

London Heathrow Lufthansa Senator lounge review

The Lufthansa Senator London Heathrow Lounge is a bit of a strange place, if only because you access it from another lounge: the Lufthansa Business Class lounge at Heathrow: on entering this lounge once you are admitted, and if you are either a Senator, or a Gold Star Alliance, you are presented with a small slip of paper with a barcode, which gives you admittance to the inner sanctum of the London Heathrow Lufthansa Senator lounge, the automated door to which is at the back of the main Business Class lounge.

Once you are through the magic sliding grey door, the lounge seems quite small, but it can seat up to 200 people so it's not to sneezed at.

On the left is a large dining area, with bench seating against the wall, and above it five clocks showing the time in Star Alliance land, and at the far end of this, the one and only white worktop type table, with high chairs overlooking everyone.

Flooding this area with natural light are the high floor to ceiling windows, however there are slats on the outside of these, so the view is very obscured.

Then, through the glass wall is the main seating area, with lots of Lufthansa's classic beige and brown armchairs, in three rows. This area can be a bit packed, but at least the chairs are separated out with small tables, each of which has a power socket next to them, low down, with both UK and EU sockets.

Keep on walking, and you'll reach the famous snooze area, with Z frame day beds, each of which looks on an illuminated wall with a display of trees. The light is kept low here, and it really is quite soporific.

Keep on walking left, and there is a strange kind of limbo overflow area, with a bench along the wall, and small extension tables protruding from it. This has to be the least comfortable area of the lounge.

Finally, as you swing back towards the entrance, there is the main refectory area, having an island bench - at which you can sit if you really want to be right out in the middle - and a long white counter with the bar.

Overall, the London Lufthansa Senator Lounge is quite decent, and it is surprising that here, at least, Star Alliance Gold frequent flyers are rated as higher up the pecking order than Business Class passengers.

Food

The main perk of the Senator, rather than the Business lounge, is the somewhat uprated food in the small senator enclave: there are two soups instead of one, and one extra hot dish. It's not a lot, but can swing the difference.

The main buffet counter is all on the slightly angled worktop against the wall to the right as you enter.

As you go along the worktop there are generally two soups, on hot plates, with tomato and potato quite common variants.

Next up are four hot tubs, but typically two of these contain just rice and mash, leaving two others with a pasta variant, and a curry, which can sometimes be exceptionally good, as it should be, provided by Do&Co.

Further up are a couple of bowls of salads.

Don't miss the sandwiches either, with a couple of variants, and ham and cheese wraps too.

On the other side, on the island bench, at the end and rather tucked away is an amazing selection of bread, with German bread and pretzels. Next to this is the cold cut selection of ham and cheese, and a great selection of cheese biscuits.

Next to these are a couple of trays of desserts in pots.

Beside the coffee and tea machines there are also normally a couple of trays of good biscuits.

At breakfast time, as you'd expect the selection changes, with pork sausages, bacon, baked beans and potatoes, plus scrambled egg.

Bar

There is a self serve bar in the Lufthansa Senator London Heathrow Lounge. It's not the best, but it's better than nothing - and certainly better than on the Business side.

On the worktop is a good spread of a dozen or so bottles of self serve spirits, with everything from Bombay Sapphire Gin, from Hampshire, to Campari and Jack Daniels.

Next to these are a couple of bottles red wines.

In the chilled trough are all the white wines, and there can be quite a few, plus some German beer and the guest UK beer: normally this comes from Brewdog.

There are also a couple of draft beer taps, with a German and London beer - typically Brewdog Lost Lager.

If you really want to delve into it, there is a printed out wine and beer menu on the counter.

Business Facilities

There is a decent work room just on the right hand side of the lounge, which is in effect a long bench, with high glass dividers and good lighting so you can bring your own laptop. There are power points here, of both UK and EU types.

There are also two rather dated PCs, which reflects the business orientated, and short hall, nature of this lounge.

Bathrooms

In lounge, and relatively clean neat and tidy, despite the lounge being open for over a decade without a revamp.

Access

The Lufthansa's Senator Lounge permits access to Miles & More Senator, HON Circle, and Gold star Alliance frequent flyers departing on a Lufthansa or Star Alliance flight.

Lufthansa and SWISS first class travellers connecting to or from a same-day flight are also permitted access.

The lounge is very close to security, and if you have access to this lounge, don't miss the great Star Alliance Gold fast track security. Alas, guests are not permitted with you through security.
