Sydney Plaza Premium lounge review

The new Plaza Premium Lounge Sydney is quite a pleasant surprise to find at the back of Sydney airport. It's a little tucked away, as it is next to the American Express lounge with which it shares some facilities; to find it turn left after duty free, keep on walking towards the Qantas lounges, and it is down the arm to the left of Mcdonalds.

There is a large lobby entrance, with of course the Plaza logo, and then you enter the lounge which is designed to reflect the colours of the Australian landscape offering a relaxed environment with comfortable lounge and dining areas.

To the left as you enter is the fully staffed bar. Then, there is the split of a central divider, with seats on one side with a great view of the runway, And oddly, on the other, not having a view. It's not entirely clear why this divider is here, and if it was removed there would be space for more seats - which the lounge at peak times needs. As you keep on walking at the far end is a dining area, and a sort of buffet kitchen space.

Like most other lounges in the terminal it is filled with lots of natural light thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows with panoramic runway views.

The new Plaza Sydney Lounge was designed by IA Design, an Australian firm.

The new Sydney Plaza lounge in effect split into two, with a land and air side, and with colours said to be inspired by the country's abundant beaches, bushlands and natural landscapes - a combination of birch and emerald green.

Much of the wood in the lounge is Australian Tasmanian oak; sourced locally is incorporated as an appreciation of nature.

The lounge alas it quite small, and can get crowded in the evenings. A real novelty of this lounge is that at some times, the entrance doubles up as the entrance to the American Express lounge: you then take the lift at the back of the lounge up the service corridor, and you can go down to the American Express, formerly the Skyteam lounge, downstairs.

Food

There is an Australian and International inspired menu freshly prepared in the open plan kitchen.

Breakfast is served until 11am, and lunch or dinner afterwards.

You can order hot meals at your table, and the lounges main, indeed dedicated speciality. Pizza.

Before 11.30am there is an 'Aussie Breakfast Pizza', while after 11am there is Pepperoni or Hawaiian Pizzas. Also on offer are Meatballs, and Mac 'n' Cheese, plus some other pasta variants. Chicken Schnitzel also features.

There is a small salad bar at the buffet, and a decent cheese board.

Between 1300 and 1600 there is high tea paired with Dilmah, the renowned Sri Lankan tea brand known for its authentic unblended teas. Food to accompany this is great, with Lemonade Scones with Whipped Cream and Strawberry Jam matched with Dilmah Gourmet Italian Almond Ceylon Single Origin or Smoked Salmon and Dill Tart with Lemon-infused Beurre Blanc with Dilmah Ceylon Young Hyson Green Tea.

Bar

There is a small bar at one end of the lounge, called the Aerobar, offering three draft beers in pints or schooners: Pirate Life, Great Northern, or Mercury, plus white or rose wine on draft (available in wineglasses, not pints).

The bar will also mix up cocktails like Espresso Martini and Dilmah Lychee Sour Fizz for $5AUD or classic Aussie milkshakes.
