Aegean Business Class Athens Lounge

NEWS: The Aegean Business Lounge at Athens airport was remodelled in the autumn of 2017. Renovations are complete. There are new seats, iMacs, and even in-lounge toilets.

The Aegean Airlines lounge Athens is a wonderfully new clean modern space, as befits a new airline which only built the lounge a few years ago at its key hub. Alas, the decor itself is a little Spartan and featured a lot of glass, chrome and red & black leather. Indeed, the tables around the dining area are almost factory-esq, with just a basic wire frame. They look pretty - and are pretty tortuous to sit in for any length of time.

The lounge is right at the far end of the Schengen side of the terminal; way past the Lufthansa lounge. Seeing the blue and chrome entrance coming into view is a welcome sight. There is a small reception desk here, from where you can either turn left to a general seating area and the toilets, or right to the centre of the lounge, right by the bar which runs along one wall.

Here, there is a small alcove with a few newspapers, the bar (such as it is) on one workbench, and the main food selection spread over the island workbench. There are dining tables at the far end of the worktop.

There is a small separate glassed-in room at the far end of the Athens Aegean Airlines lounge; it is the smoking area, oddly with a door right by the food area.

There are sofas in this part of the lounge, and floor to ceiling glass windows. Alas, it looks out over the car park and train station. It isn't the best view at the airport.

The atmosphere in the lounge is always very work-a-day; few people stay for long, and there are few frills, but curiously everyone wants to eat. As a result the food is above average, even if there is little to tempt you to stay for long.

The lounge itself is in the Schengen side, just down from the Lufthansa lounge, and a long long walk from the boarding pass check. However, the only check to get here is that you do have a boarding pass for that day: you can enter here, leave the Schengen side, and then enter the non-Schengen side if you have a flight leaving that day to the UK or other non-Schengen country, and indeed this is a regular walk for many passengers, as the Aegean Airlines non Schengen lounge is the Olympic Airlines lounge, right next to the gates the London flight uses, but to get into it, you need a lounge invite from - you guessed it - the Aegean lounge, right at the other side of the terminal, a good half mile walk away.

Food

On the right hand side (inland) side, there is a large buffet counter.

The selection of food in the lounge is impressive. There are several varieties of finger sandwiches, with cheese and ham, under plastic covers.

Sweet Greek pastries also make a full appearance here, with everything from Danish to fairy cakes.

There is a small hot cabinet of beef, spinach, and cheese filled pastries, which are better than you might expect.

Naturally there are the usual biscuits, and nuts too.

Bar

The bar in the Aegean Athens Lounge is good, so long as you like Greek wine. There are two types of red, and two of white. Also while you are here, check out the brochure with a list on the wines served by Aegean Airlines.

Spirits aren't nearly as good as on the Lufthansa side. There are four types of whisky (only basic Red Label & JB) plus Bacardi and Vodka. There is however an impressive Ouzo selection, with three types in bottles, and you can have the delight of seeing it turn white when you add water.

Beer is just the usual Greek Mythos, in cans.

Bathrooms

In lounge, door by reception. They are pretty grotty, and have seen better days.

Business Facilities

There is a small business booth, with two computers: alas it is placed right by the window and sunglare is a problem.

There is free wifi.

Newspapers are in a small alcove by reception; there is a good selection of Greek newspapers, however the only English language newspaper is from the United States; odd, as Aegean doesn't fly to the US, and in the Schengen area, all flights are to Europe anyway.

Thankfully there is a newspaper stand outside in the terminal which sells all of the daily UK papers.
