Boston British Airways Galleries lounge review

The British Airways Galleries lounge at Boston Logan airport is a delight. Almost exactly like you would want and hope a full mainline airline is, British Airways has done well, with a showpiece lounge that is a bit of a show stopper.

As you walk, down a long corridor, and approach the main 'podium' reception desks, there is a sense of anticipation, and so it becomes as you walk in, past the luggage collection area on the left, and then straight on with the dining area on the right. Here there are three long low white benches, with two separate refectory areas: one side has all the hot dishes, while on the other is the salad bar and charcuterie section plus salad bar.

Although the British Airways Boston Lounge is a combined First and Business Class lounge, it has separate at seat dining for First Class customers on the far side of the dining area.

The main part of the Boston British Airways lounge has a variety of seating areas, all with different levels of 'relaxation', and boasts floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Boston bay, the runways, and inland.

Carry on, either side of a central area which contains the bathrooms and shower suites, with two separate smaller seating areas on each side. These are the quietest areas, with high backed armchairs, separated by small tables with power sockets and tall table lamps. You will not go short of power or light here, and indeed it is worth looking at some of the lighting design, with the classic round paper globes, intermixed with smaller golden lights.

However it is the Champagne bar which is the glorious centre of the lounge, with amazing views at sunset of the city behind you. There are seats at the bar - although they are not that popular - and plywood swivelling chairs around it, which certainly are. However, beware if you take these, when it is time to board the aircraft, the queue to board the plane will go right through your group of seats, for it is here that there is one of the most unique features of the lounge, the ability to board your aircraft from it. It is a distinct novelty, that few BA lounges have.

The lounge is 30 per cent bigger than the previous space, holding up to 220 people, however when the A380 boards for the first flight to London of the day, and with most of the passengers having status, the lounge can get seriously packed. It gets quieter after that.

Food

There is a "Concorde Dining" restaurant for First Class passengers in the British Airways Boston Lounge, and this is rigorously patrolled, with no access for Golds or Silvers. If you sit in these small tables here, to the side of the main dining area, there is waitress service, with a small but very good menu. Be aware that service can sometimes be extraordinarily slow, so you might want to order, and then go to the bar for half an hour before returning to get your main course.

For everyone else in Business Class or for Golds and Silvers, there are hot and cold buffet options.

The hot options are quite extensive, with a hot buffet on one side of the lounge, with sometimes up to a dozen different dishes, generally along the curry, pasta, or Mexican themes, all under the big 'Savour' the flavour banner: good to see the U making an appearance.

On the other side of the dining area is a salad bar, and it's really quite good, with a lot of variety; check out the beetroot coleslaw if it is available when you visit.

There is also an extensive charcuterie selection, with lots of different cold cuts of ham, and a lot of cheese and biscuits, plus bowls of chutney.

Bar

Of course it is the Champagne bar which is the centre of the lounge, and to which many passengers make a direct B line. Similar, but much bigger and much busier to the near identical bar in Washington IAD, the bar of course serves champagne. There is also a decent wine list with three whites and three reds, although if you are a wine drinker, you might find it quicker to pop around to the self serve section in the dining area.

However, it is for sunset cocktails that the bar comes into it's own. There is a small list of cocktails available, but the bar will also mix up cocktails on demand, and the bar staff know most of them by heart.

Note that in common with BA US lounge, tipping is unusual.

Business Facilities

On the left side of the lounge there is a laptop table with six chairs, and power sockets. In this small work area there is a printer, which you can connect to via wifi, although it can be tricky to get it to connect.

There is free, fast wifi.

Newspapers and magazines have been removed from the lounge in the past few years.

Bathrooms

In lounge, and good, with a good selection of shower suites.

Access

First and Business Class British Airways, Gold and Silver members of Executive Club oneworld Emerald and Sapphire frequent flyers.

No access to Priority Pass.

Note that although you can now walk airside from the American Airlines terminal without passing through security, it is a good 20 minutes brisk walk. Also note that the reception staff do everything they can to turn away passengers with valid American Airlines tickets, and those on AA with status. You will have no luck trying to gain access with AA status on a domestic, however if you have BA status and are travelling internationally on American, if you poliety stand your ground, and quote the oneworld rules about access for BA oneworld Emerald and Sapphire travelling on a oneworld airline, you will be grudgingly granted admitance.
