Amsterdam Schiphol Star Alliance lounge review

The new Star Alliance lounge at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is great. Brand new, it now the Aegean, Austrian, Lufthansa, SAS, Swiss and TAP Air Portugal Amsterdam lounge. It is in the Schengen Area, and as such is generally only used by European airlines for short-haul, although access is possible long haul.

Designed by Amsterdam-based architectural design firm D-Dock, the Star Alliance Amsterdam Lounge also has a luggage room, individual work booths, a shared reading / work table, with wifi printing or scanning.

Most impressive about this brand new lounge is the way the space has been divided up into a large number of zones, all with their own style, and all feeling very refined, like the lobby of a four star hotel.

The lounge is located in the Schengen area of the airport in Terminal 1, after the security check, Airside in Departures 2, on the third floor of terminal 1 at the Panorama terrace, next to Aspire Lounge.

Once you are past the reception desk, enjoy the light as there are floor to ceiling windows. Then, there is an alcove on the right with the bar, and cozy sitting areas along the wall. Around here there are lots of black and white pictures, quotes in large letters on the wall, and tributes to the ever famous constantly shifting fluffy clouds of Amsterdam.

It is worth going further into the lounge. At the back are work nooks and a large social space with televisions, and wine racks dot the lounge, although you can't get a drink from them.

The lounge caters to up to 150 guests at a time, but can get quite busy in the evenings.

From the lounge, travellers have easy access to the gates for flights to European destinations in the Schengen zone of the Star Alliance member airlines.

Food

The new Star Alliance Lounge at Schiphol has pretty good food. There is a buffet area, with sandwich, wraps, ham and lots of cheese (Dutch cheese of course) and several tubs of hot dishes, including meat, rice, and pasta dishes.

This lounge shares a kitchen with the Aspire Lounge next door.

Bar

There is a good bar in the Amsterdam Star Alliance Lounge.

A Heineken tap allows you to pour your own draught.

There are a couple of bottle of white and red around the buffet - alas, not of the type on the wine racks.

Spirits are on the counter.

Business Facilities

Being a new lounge, there are no computers as most passengers will bring their own device, but there are plenty of USB recharging sockets at every seat.

Free wifi.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms can be found to the far rear of the lounge and are of extremely high quality, featuring Rituals "Black Oud" scent diffusers.

Access

There is access for passengers in first or business class on Star Alliance, along with Star Alliance Gold frequent flyers, and passengers with paid membership to Air Canada's Maple Leaf Club or the United Club programs.

Air Canada, United, Singapore Airlines will continue to use lounges in the non-Schengen area of the terminal, but passengers can access this lounge if they have an EU passport - and enough time. To access this lounge from the Schengen area you will need to go through passport control twice. From the Schengen area, you can walk straight from the lounge to your gate.

No pay on the door, and no daypasses are for sale.
