Tenerife South Airport is the main airport on the Canary Island of Tenerife. The airport is located in Granadilla de Abona, on the extreme south east coast of the island, which is right next to most of the main tourist resorts, but a good 60km (38 miles) south of the main town of Santa Cruz.

The airport was Previously known as Tenerife South-Reina Sofia Airport. Beware that there are two Tenerife Airports on the relatively tiny island of Tenerife. Tenerife South Airport (TFS) now carries twice as many passengers as Tenerife North Airport (TFN), and eclipses it particularly for traffic to the UK and northern Europe.

Tenerife South Airport was opened after the disaster at Tenerife North Airport, which was the site of the worst accident in aviation history when 583 people were killed after two Boeing 747s collided in heavy fog. A flight from the UK also slammed into the mountains around Tenerife North in the 1980s, killing everyone on board. The publicity surround the huge number of deaths from the two incidents effectively prevented UK airlines from flying to anywhere but Tenerife South, and the abandonment of direct flights to the US from the Canary Islands.

The airport terminal is small, and only has a basic selection of facilities. There is a newsagents selling a few books after security, and a duty free shop.

Because so many tour operators include transfers in their packages, public transport options are limited.

Travellers should know that many bus, limousine and shuttle bus services operating to and from Tenerife South Airport usually require pre-booking.

There are only a few Local buses operated by Titsa from Tenerife South Airport. The bus stop is directly outside Arrivals.

Bus 111 links the airport with Santa Cruz (fare: €6.45EUR) and Playa de las Américas (fare: €2EUR).
Bus 450 links Tenerife South Airport to Playa de las Américas (fare: €4.95EUR) and Granadilla.
Bus 343 connects the Tenerife South Airport (TFS) directly with Tenerife North Airport (TFN) - this is a very useful connection if you arrive at the wrong airport, but it can take over two hours(fare: €6.45EUR). It also calls in at Puerto de la Cruz.

Getting a taxi to and from Tenerife South Airport is usually trouble free, but can be very expensive.

Taking a taxi up north to Santa Cruz costs approximately €80EUR, while to the tourist resorts in Playa de las Américas is €30EUR.

There are only a couple of cafés plus a small fast-food outlet after security, however there are plenty of bars airside. There is the Bill Bentley pub, the Dorada bar and the Carlsberg pub.
