San Francisco airport

San Francisco International Airport is a huge international airport, a major gateway for the West Coast to Europe, and for Australasia.

Just 13 miles (21 km) south of Downtown San Francisco, it can feel far further away when you are on the train or a taxi to the airport.

A very large new airport, it boomed in both of the dom-com eras, with hourly shuttles to San Jose, it is now however only the seventh-busiest airport in the United States and the 24th-busiest in the world by passenger count.

To get between the terminals there is a fast, convenient direct AirTrain people mover, running between the terminals, parking lots, the Grand Hyatt hotel, the BART station for the city, and the rental car centre on small automatic trains.

The airport has four terminals (1, 2, 3, and International) and seven concourses (Boarding Areas A through G) with a total of 115 airbridges.

The International Terminal, Terminal 1, is split into two, with separate boarding areas A and G.

Airside, post security, it is possible to walk between many of the terminals, although access can be down now dingy tunnels or around winding stairs. The most convenient link is between Terminal 3's Boarding Area F to the International Terminal Boarding Area G, both used by United, and with three lounges.

There is quite a lot of public art in the terminal. In the interior of Terminal 2, don't miss Janet Echelman's 'Every Beating Second' installation on the ceiling.

Equally, and an attraction in itself, is the new control tower, built on a very slim base.

San Francisco Airport International Terminal

Terminal 1 is the biggie. It's huge, the largest international terminal in North America, and the largest building in the world built on base isolators to protect against earthquakes.

Be warned that Terminal International is not Terminal 1, however it looks the same on boarding cards: check your T1 or TI carefully.

The Aviation Museum and Library is located in the International Terminal, featuring a model of a DC-3, and it is well worth a visit. The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco also shows many exhibits here, and again it's worth arriving early for a flight, just for a look around.

It's a busy place, with top international destinations London, followed by Hong Kong, Taipei and Vancouver.
