London Stansted airport
London Stansted Airport holds a certain affection, and horror, for many Londoners. It is in it's own right a major international airport serving London, located near Stansted Mountfitchet 42 miles northeast of the capital. It is the fourth-busiest airport in the UK.
Stansted is a base for a number of European low-cost carriers - and that's what gives it it's reputation. Taht most low cost of the discount carriers, Ryanair is absolutely dominant at the airport, although a few other minor Eastern European carriers also do pop up occasionally.
However, on new carrier is an oddball. Emirates flies twice a day down to Dubai; a strange incursion for a quality carrier.
Lufthansa also has a summer route to Munich, and Widerøe to Bergen.

The vast glass-box-in-a-field terminal building was designed by architectural practice Foster + Partners, and completed in 1991. At the time it was an isolated terminal, with just a small car park out front. It is very different now, with a long row of shops inside, and it must be said a remarkable number of airside pubs.

It's actually a decent pub, with quite a lot of atmosphere. Don't miss the giant brick tower, looking vaguely like a windmill, in the middle of the bar, hovering on stilts.
There is also an upper level to the bar, with great views of the runways.
There is history behind it too: The Windmill is also located on the former setting of a windmill and the ancient village of Cooper's End.
