Venice airport
Venice Marco Polo Airport is as you might expect, the major the international airport of Venice. What you might not expect is that it right on the Venice lagoon, and it is one of the few airports in the world where the major means of transport to the airport, is via boat.
There is just one large, modern terminal, which was opened in 2002, but it is already at full capacity, thanks to a large number of international flights which now serve into Venice from the Middle East, Asia and America. In mid-winter it can seem busy. In summer, it is as busy as the streets of Venice.

Most of the departure gates are for Schengen flights, with only a small part for non-Schengen flights such as to the UK, with additional passport controls once you are through security. Both the two departure lounges (the "Tintoretto Lounge" for SkyTeam customers and the "Marco Polo Room" general lounge) are after security, but before Schengen passport control.
Note that Venice Airport flights usually land from the south, giving you a nice view of Venice from the right hand window seats.

Venice airport Waterbus dock
From Venice Airport to the centre of Venice, you can either take the waterbus, which takes about an hour, or the Aerobus, which takes about 12 minutes to Piazzale Roma .
Be aware than the walk from Plaza Roma to St Marks Square takes about 45 minutes, and has plenty of steps.
If arriving late at night at Plaza Roma, head to the night water bus - look for the glass bridge on the left as you get off the bus, and there is a small ponto with a waiting shelter for the Venice Night Water Shuttle. Make sure you buy a ticket in advance, and be aware that Night water buses run in both directions.

Nothing beats approaching Venice by water - but be aware you should allow plenty of time, and not attempt this late at night (anytime after 8pm) as it takes so long, and Venice pretty much shuts down by 10pm
The Alilaguna water shuttle (Blue, Red and Orange lines) leave from the airport - just follow the signs to the Water Bus in the terminal, and there is an undercover water bus station. The lines are confusing, and you should research your destination well in advance.
ACTV operates all the water bus routes. The basic fare for one vaporetto journey is €7.50 (valid for 75 minutes), but a 24 hours travel card is €20.
You can also get to Piazza San Marco by the express Gold Line or water taxi.
